Brookhaven reports on Mastic cleanup

The results of Brookhaven Town’s Operation Clean Sweep in Mastic are in.

Starting Sept. 9, the town’s Quality of Life task force went through the area bordered by Patchogue Avenue, Meadowmere Avenue, Mastic Road and Floyd Road. It accomplished the following:

— 259 street signs were repaired or replaced.
— 34 streetlights were repaired.
— 49 trees were trimmed.
— One ton of trash and debris was removed.

The task force also issued more than 100 notices to residents for issues ranging from litter to unregistered vehicles and parking on lawns. A number of appearance tickets were issued for violations of town codes as well.

“Once again, we have seen great success with Operation Clean Sweep. I thank our Quality of Life Task Force for their work with the Departments of Waste Management and Traffic Safety to clean up this neighborhood in Mastic,” town supervisor Mark Lesko said in a news release.

Operation Clean Sweep will continue throughout Brookhaven one neighborhood at a time, Lesko said.

Republican Councilman Daniel Panico, who represents Mastic, said the operation in his area “made a noticeable difference regarding the removal of trash, replacement of lights and replacement of missing or vandalized signs. The effort to aggressively root out illegal and substandard housing will continue, along with similar efforts to ensure that our neighborhoods are clean and safe."
