Brookhaven seeks homes for displaced cats

Thirty cats rescued Friday from a home in Center Moriches will be offered for adoption by the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in Farmingville. The Suffolk SPCA removed 60 cats and one dog from the home, which Brookhaven officials condemned after determining it was uninhabitable.

The dog was taken by the resident’s daughter and the remaining cats went to the Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Port Jefferson Station.

“I hope that residents come to the animal shelter and adopt these cats because they will make great pets for a loving family who can properly care for them,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement.

The 30 cats at the town shelter will be available for adoption after they are spayed or neutered and get up-to-date vaccinations, town spokesman Jack Krieger said.

The Center Moriches home is the third one in the town that has been condemned in the past six months because of unsanitary living conditions, Councilman Dan Panico said in a statement.
