Brookhaven sends cellphones to troops

In an effort to help servicemen and women stay connected to loved ones, the Town of Brookhaven recently sent more than 80 used cellphones to active-duty military personnel through the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” campaign.
The lobby of Town Hall at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville has boxes for the cellphone drive, which helps soldiers get free phone cards to call home. There will also be a donation box at the Vets Rock concert at the Penny Saver Amphitheater on Saturday, Sept. 22.
“Cell Phones for Soldiers is another wonderful service that exists to make life a little better for the brave men and women defending our freedom overseas,” acting town supervisor Councilwoman Kathy Walsh said in a news release. Walsh also is the town board’s liaison to the town’s Veterans Services Division. “I thank Veterans Services Officer John Rago and everyone who donated cell phones for their continued efforts to improve the quality of life of our soldiers.”
The Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization “Cell Phones for Soldiers” has collected more than 10 million cell phones in the past eight years for military personnel. Donations also can be made by printing prepaid shipping labels from cellphonesforsoldiers.com to ship up to four phones at no charge to the sender.
