Brookhaven shelter dogs need temporary homes during kennel renovation

Brookhaven officials are asking residents to adopt dogs temporarily from the town animal shelter while a kennel is renovated next month.

About 40 dogs must be relocated, Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said in a news release. Work on the kennel is scheduled to start on Jan. 6 and is expected to last three to four weeks.

“This is work that really needs to get done now and with only a few weeks to go before it begins, I am hoping that our residents will heed the call and take a dog home, even if it’s just for a little while,” he said in a statement.

Residents interested in taking in a dog should visit the shelter, at 300 Horseblock Rd. in Brookhaven hamlet, and complete a contract, which must be notarized.

Shelter hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

“Temporary adoptions will help while we’re getting the work done,” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner, the town board liaison to the animal shelter, “and maybe after having a dog for a few weeks, some people will decide to keep it as part of their family.”
