Brookhaven board to discuss change to anti-nepotism law

The Brookhaven Town board has scheduled a public hearing to discuss a proposed amendment to the town’s anti-nepotism law.

The amendment proposed by Supervisor Edward P. Romaine would bar the town from awarding no-bid contracts to relatives of elected town officials and supervisory staff.

The public hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.

Two other public hearings that night would discuss proposed facility improvements at the Mastic and Mount Sinai ambulance districts.

In a statement, Romaine said the anti-nepotism amendment would establish “very specific guidelines” and eliminate “any gray area that may have existed in the past.

“The public expects that employment opportunities and contracts are awarded based on certain criteria and fair business practices that level the playing field for anyone who wants to work for or do business with the town,” Romaine said.
