Brookhaven Town gets $83G LIPA rebate

Thanks to energy-efficient features in the Brookhaven Parks Administration building, Brookhaven Town received a $83,000 Commercial Efficiency rebate from LIPA last week.
The 12,000-square-foot parks building was opened in May 2011 in the Centereach pool complex and also houses a youth recreation center.

The structure was built with several environment-friendly features such as a geothermal system, window glazing, insulated roof and walls to prevent air leakage, and an under-the-floor air distribution and heating system.

It was the town’s first building to receive a Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design certification, joining a short list of about a dozen government buildings on Long Island that hold the LEED certification.

Previously, the town received a $56,870 rebate from LIPA for energy savings for the building, which cost $4.9 million to construct.

“I thank LIPA for defraying the costs of the energy-saving Parks Administration building. The Town is setting an example through its LEED certified Parks building, which is a model for new green construction,” town Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement.

“With the assistance of LIPA’s efficiency and renewable programs, the Town will achieve significant savings that can now be reinvested into additional community programs,” LIPA chief operating officer Michael Harvey said in a statement.
