Brookhaven Town: Remove graffiti faster

The Town of Brookhaven has tightened its graffiti laws in hopes of discouraging vandalism.

The new law requires business owners to remove graffiti on property within five days, with free assistance from the town, or face a $150 penalty.

Previously, business owners had 14 days to fix the graffiti.

The new law, sponsored by Councilwoman Connie Kepert, hinges on the premise that the longer graffiti is visible, the more likely other vandals will be inspired to strike.

The town will offer sandblasters and assistance from youth volunteers or inmates provided by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.

The town board passed the law 6-1 Tuesday at its board meeting. Councilman Tim Mazzei cast the opposing vote.
