Mike Brunoforte had just set a St. Anthony's indoor pole vault record, and all he could do after his jump was think about what he could have done better.

"I was running kind of slow down the lane," he said after he cleared a jump of 15 feet, 3 inches at the Molloy Stanner Games at the Armory Saturday. "And the top of my jump wasn't too great, either. But hey, I'll take it."

Nevertheless, Brunoforte's jump broke a 15-year-old school record previously held by Paul Schmitt, who jumped 15-2 in 1997.

The jump was also more than good enough for the win -- the next closest jump was a foot and three inches shorter than Brunoforte's vault.

The jump also came with a little bit of added pressure. The Armory public-address announcer brought it to the attention of everyone in attendance, and the crowd of about 2,000 athletes and spectators cheered him on with a thunderous slow-clap as he took his approach.

"The crowd definitely helped a lot," Brunoforte, a senior, said. "It was pretty cool to have everyone behind me."
