No win for the ages. Or, for that matter, the aged.

Rockies starter Jamie Moyer, 49, failed in his second attempt to become the oldest pitcher to win a major-league game as Madison Bumgarner took a no-hit bid into the sixth and scattered four hits in 7 1/3 innings Thursday in the San Francisco Giants' 4-2 win over host Colorado.

Moyer was thwarted not only by Bumgarner, 22, but by centerfielder Dexter Fowler, whose sixth-inning error on a routine fly ball led to two unearned runs. "Yeah, that's what he does," the Rockies' Jason Giambi said. "He gets guys to put the ball in play and you've got to make outs. And you can't make those little mistakes, because he's not a strikeout pitcher. You can't keep asking him to throw more and more pitches."

Moyer (0-2) allowed four run (two earned) and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Bumgarner (1-1), who wasn't even born when Moyer made his major-league debut in 1986, stifled a lineup that had produced 17 runs and 22 hits a night earlier.

The age difference between the starting pitchers -- 26 years and 256 days -- was the largest since Satchel Paige faced Bill Monbouquette in 1965 and the third-largest since 1900, according to STATS LLC. "It was pretty cool getting to throw against him," Bumgarner said. "I can see why he's still successful. He's tough to hit."

Phillies 3, Marlins 1: Joe Blanton (1-1) allowed three hits in seven innings and Shane Victorino and Ty Wigginton homered off Mark Buehrle (0-2) at Citizens Bank Park.

Cubs 8, Brewers 0: Matt Garza (1-0) pitched three-hit ball for 8 2/3 innings and host Chicago sent Zack Greinke to his worst beating in 1 1/2 years.

Nationals 3, Reds 2: Ryan Zimmerman scored on Alfredo Simon's wild pitch in the 10th, helping the Nationals (5-2) extend their best start since moving to Washington. They treated an announced sellout crowd of 40,907 to a win in the home opener for the first time since 2008.

Twins 10, Angels 9: Justin Morneau hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth as host Minnesota rallied from six runs down.

Tigers 7, Rays 2: Brennan Boesch's four RBIs on his 27th birthday led host Detroit (5-1).

Rangers 5, Mariners 3: Michael Young's two-run homer and four RBIs backed Derek Holland for host Texas.-- AP
