Business contest for Nassau students announced

Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos Tuesday announced at Massapequa High School that he is hosting the first-ever “Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial High School Challenge” in which more than 200 business students from high schools across the county will compete for scholarship prizes from two sponsors.

The schools have formed teams to create business concepts that can thrive in the current economy. They will be judged on April 17 at county headquarters in Mineola by industry experts. The winners will receive scholarship awards from Hofstra University and Healthplex, a local dental insurer.

Each team will have five to 20 members. Hofstra will give a $1,500 scholarship to every member of the top team. The second-place team will split $4,000 in scholarship money from Healthplex.

“My office has created a competition where the leaders of tomorrow will be challenged today to come up with business ideas that they feel will thrive in Nassau County,” Maragos said. “We are eager to motivate young adults to pursue business initiatives.”

So far, 13 schools, public and private, are participating.
