Organizers of the Central Islip Clean Streets Project are seeking volunteers for a communitywide cleanup Saturday.

The project is “more or less trying to brighten up the streets,” said Michael Ramos, who along with his cousin, Marcos Maldonado, heads the Clean Streets Committee and organized the event. He said volunteers will focus on several main roads including Lowell Avenue, Clayton Street and Carleton Avenue.

Vans provided by local nonprofits will take volunteers to and from cleanup locations, he said. Afterward, volunteers will gather at the Central Islip Recreation Center for food provided by Applebee’s.

Participants will mow lawns, plant trees, and put down mulch and soil in public spaces along the roads, Ramos said.

Last year, the Clean Streets Committee hosted events to paint over graffiti in Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore, Ramos said. This year, the group is focusing on garbage removal and beautification.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are asked to report to the recreation center at 555 Clayton St.

Anyone interested in volunteering or reporting areas with large amounts of litter and garbage should call 347-292-9272.
