O Canada! They will sing it loud and proud thanks to the unlikely upset pulled by Alexandre Bilodeau, who won the men's moguls last night to become the first Canadian to win Olympic gold inside Canada's borders.

Showing all the speed and daring a skier needs to make some history, Bilodeau blazed through the slushy moguls, tore down the course in 23.17 seconds and posted a score of 26.75. That was .17 points better than defending champion Dale Begg-Smith, a Vancouver native who now competes for Australia.

Bryon Wilson of the United States finished third.

Frenchman takes biathlon

Lashed by sheets of rain and snow, Vincent Jay of France won a biathlon gold medal in his Olympic debut. Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway won the silver medal, 12.2 seconds back. Jakov Fak of Croatia got the bronze, finishing another 1.8 seconds behind.

Tim Burke, hoping to become the first American to win an Olympic medal in biathlon, missed three shots and finished 47th. Jeremy Teela was the best American, in ninth place despite missing two shots.

Czech woman breaks through

Martina Sablikova gave the Czech Republic its first Olympic medal in speedskating with a gold in the women's 3,000 meters in Richmond, British Columbia. Sablikova, 22, finished in 4 minutes, 2.53 seconds, more than 2 seconds ahead of silver medalist Stephanie Beckert of Germany (4:04.62). Canada settled for a bronze from Kristina Groves (4:04.84).
