Car fires snarl traffic on LIE

Car fires on the Northern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway slowed traffic during the evening commute on Thursday.
On the Long Island Expressway eastbound, a car fire near Exit 51 caused right lane closures, leaving only the HOV lane open, according to the New York Department of Transportation's website. According to the website, the backup was resolved at 7:42 p.m.
Earlier, the center and right lanes on the Northern State Parkway were closed at exit 26, according to the website. As of 3:59 p.m., the incident had been resolved.
