A Kings Park teenager died Friday after the motorized dirt bike he was riding on a street in Kings Park was hit by a car, Suffolk police said.

Nicholas Hein, 17, was struck by a car driven by Daniel Byrne, 38, of Kings Park, about 5 p.m., police said. He died a short time later at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said. Byrne was not injured.

Byrne told police he was driving east on East Northport Road and turned left onto Cedar Street when he collided with the dirt bike, police said.

The dirt bike, which was unregistered, did not have a headlight or other safety equipment, and is designed for off street use, police said.

Det. Sgt. John Twiname said, "This was a vehicle not designed for use on the roadway. It's an off-roadway type vehicle."

Detectives asked that anyone with information about the incident call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452, or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
