Catherine Havens gets no-no; coach gets 300th win
Catherine Havens pitched a five-inning no-hitter with one walk and 12 strikeouts in leading Eastport-South Manor over Harborfields, 13-0, in League V softball. The walk came in the fourth inning of what was the junior's third no-hitter this season. Chelsea Kull went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Sharks offense.
The victory was the 300th of coach Steve Giacolone's career as Eastport-South Manor improved to 13-3 in leauge play. "I've been blessed," said Giacolone, in his 24th season. "The girls knew about it because they saw it on the [Newsday] blog, but I tried to keep it quiet... It's an accomplishment, but it's a lot of years and a lot of great teams. It's through a lot of people that I've been able to achieve this."
