Centerport Harbor dredging to begin

Dredging will begin Saturday on a Suffolk County project in Centerport Harbor designed to improve recreational boating, the Town of Huntington announced.

The dredging, which will take six weeks, will ultimately create a 12-foot-deep passage in the Centerport Harbor Navigation Channel.

Material from the dredging project — a total of 30,000 cubic yards of sand — will be used to replenish Centerport Beach and the Huntington Beach Community Association beach.

During the project — the first half of which will be take place around the clock — some boaters will be asked to remove their boats and moorings from the area while work is underway. The town harbormaster’s office has said it will try to accommodate those who will be displaced.

When the project is complete, the town plans to reseed shellfish in the area as part of its shellfish hatchery program.
