THE BUDGET

The district is proposing a $171,367,626 budget for the 2010-11 school year, a 3.48 percent increase over the current $165,610,336 spending plan.

The local tax levy would rise by 7.51 percent from the current $74,389,279 to $79,974,986 in 2010-11.

The owner of the average single-family house assessed at $40,000 would pay $7,900 in school taxes, up 7.57 percent from $7,344 this year.

The proposed budget would eliminate 113 positions, including 62 teachers. Salary negotiations are ongoing.

The budget would also reduce full-day kindergarten to a half day, eliminate high school junior varsity sports and all middle school sports, and cut the alternative high school program.
