Chili cook-off set for Tuesday

Last year, chili enthusiasts walked table to table, tasting a wide range of entries.

Next Tuesday, their taste buds get another shot, when 20 local teams compete in the third annual Most Delicious Chili Cook-Off at 7 p.m. at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School.

Susan Stewart, committee chair of the cook-off, said the proceeds benefit the Parent-Teacher Association’s college awards for graduating seniors who have shown a strong commitment to community service.

“It’s an evening of community bonding and building relationships,” said Stewart, 46, of Plainview. “Students can judge their school principal's cooking and the public can meet the faces behind local businesses, such as Plainview Hospital, Buffalo Grille, Dr. Michael Goldman and WPOB radio station, to name a few.”

Last year’s chili cook-off raised $1,000, enough for one scholarship, she said.

Mia Schwartz, who placed first last year for her Mama Mia’s Amazin’ Caliente Chili, used ground sirloin, beans, tomatoes, garlic, cocoa, onion, habanero and other seasonings.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students.
