Cleanup starting on Babylon Superfund site

Cleanup of leaks from the National Heatset Printing Superfund site in Babylon will begin this month, state environmental officials said.

Contaminated soil and groundwater resulted from solvents used to clean parts and equipment at the 1 Adams Blvd. plant the company operated from 1983 to 1989, according to a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation release.

Cleanup will involve treating the contaminated groundwater in underground wells at a Suffolk County Water Authority site on Albany Avenue, about a mile south of the Adams Boulevard plant.

Cleanup is expected to take six months and cost $2.8 million, according to the statement.
