Cody Ross' three-run walk-off HR leads Boston
Cody Ross' 5-year old son stood behind him as he sat at a podium during a postgame interview session, triggering him to recall when he first started to enjoy hitting in the clutch.
"I've always wanted to be up in those situations since I was like my son's age," Ross said of his three-run homer in the ninth that lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox Thursday night. "It's a great feeling, especially when you're the hero."
Ross' dramatic shot came one night after he hit three-run homers in consecutive innings of a 10-1 win.
Before the game, he was jokingly asked if there'd be a repeat performance.
"I thought it was kind of a dumb question, but I guess it wasn't," he said.
Rays 6, Indians 0: David Price became the AL's first 13-game winner and B.J. Upton had three RBIs for host Tampa Bay.
Price (13-4) allowed two hits in seven innings and won his fifth consecutive decision.
Upton hit a three-run double off Ubaldo Jimenez (8-9) during a four-run sixth that made it 5-0.
Tigers 5, Angels 1: Max Scherzer (9-5) struck out nine and Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered for host Detroit.
Orioles 4, Twins 3: Mark Reynolds' two-run single in the eighth inning backed Wei-Yin Chen (8-5) and rallied visiting Baltimore.
Mariners 6, Royals 1: Felix Hernandez (8-5) won his fourth straight decision and Jesus Montero homered and drove in four runs for visiting Seattle.
Braves 3, Giants 2: Freddie Freeman and David Ross hit home runs for host Atlanta.
Reds 7, Diamondbacks 6: Brandon Phillips homered and had five RBIs, then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on Todd Frazier's single as host Cincinnati rallied from a six-run deficit.
Cubs 4, Marlins 2: Paul Maholm (8-6) pitched eight innings, Alfonso Soriano homered and the Cubs ruined Mark Buehrle's return to Chicago. Buehrle (9-9) was back in the Windy City for the first time since he left the White Sox.-- AP
