Officials plan to dedicate a new commercial motor vehicle inspection site in Commack this morning to a Suffolk County police officer who died in the line of duty.

Officer Glen Ciano, 45, died on Commack Road and Motor Parkway in February 2009 when his patrol car was rammed by a drunken driver.

Ciano’s wife, Susan, said that she was honored by the dedication.

“I didn’t know it was in the works,” said Ciano, 50, of Bayport. “I think it’s really special that they chose to name it after Glen ... it’s a way of even having truckers conscious that they can hurt somebody or themselves.”

The inspection site is north of the Long Island Expressway, on the west side of Crooked Hill Road, between Henry Street and Commack Road. It will be the second official area for inspecting commercial trucks in Suffolk, Sgt. Michael Mallin, of Suffolk County Highway Patrol Bureau’s motor carrier safety section, said in a previous interview. The other site is between Exits 65 and 66 off the westbound Long Island Expressway.

During inspections, police walk around and go underneath trucks to check suspension, brakes, tires and fluids, Mallin has said, adding that they also ensure the load is secure and that the driver is properly licensed.

Smithtown officials allowed the county — at no cost — to use a 1-acre parcel for the inspection site. PJ Venture donated that parcel to the town in a zoning agreement.
