Federal and airport officials are expected to attend a community meeting Monday
night to address ways to control jet noise in communities near Kennedy Airport.
Representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority
of New York and New Jersey
and Aviation Development Council will attend the meeting of the Town-Village Aircraft Safety &
Noise Abatement Committee at 7:30 p.m. in Lawrence Village Hall (196 Central Ave., Lawrence).
At the last meeting in October, FAA and Port Authority officials said they would create a memorandum of understanding to detail each agency’s respective responsibilities for noise abatement procedures and protocols
. FAA officials said they would start monitoring the altitude of nighttime flights on Oct. 31 because there is less air traffic at night.
Members of the 40-year-old coalition have called for equitable distribution of flights onto the airport’s eight runway approaches, a ban on low-flying planes and a reduction of late-night flights to reduce aircraft noise. They also have asked that the two agencies create a toll-free number so residents can easily get information and file complaints. The committee represents nearly 145,000 people living in 13 communities in Hempstead and North Hempstead towns.
FAA officials have said runway use is determined by many factors, including wind direction, weather conditions, construction projects and noise abatement procedures.
