Composting units, rain barrels for sale in Hempstead

Hempstead Town began distributing home-based rain barrels and composting units as part of its “Eco-heroes” program Thursday.

The equipment — pre-ordered by 1,839 residents — is designed to conserve water and reduce household waste, town officials said.

Supervisor Kate Murray distributed the gear during an event at Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve on Merrick Road in Merrick Thursday morning.

Murray cited the residents as “committed to making our planet a healthier place for our families and future generations” in a statement.

“Our ‘eco-heroes’ will be conserving tap water by utilizing rain barrels for gardening, and composting will decrease materials entering the waste stream while reducing the need for purchased soil additives for gardeners,” Murray said.

The rain barrels and composting units are available to Hempstead Town residents for $45 each. Residents can call 516-378-4210 to order a unit.
