North Hempstead Town officials and Port Washington business owners and residents are scheduled to gather Wednesday for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new development at the location of the former Knickerbocker Yacht Club in Port Washington.

The new Knickerbocker at Manhasset Bay will house 32 condominiums for those 62 years and older, and a 41-seat restaurant, along with boat slips and moorings.

The development will also feature a green roof, with 60 percent of the roof covered by native plants, along with other energy-efficient and green initiatives.

A Queens company, Cord Meyer Development Co., will be developing the Main Street property, with design elements in keeping with the Knickerbocker Yacht Club.

That club closed its doors in 2009 after club officers said running the club became economically unsustainable. It had been a Port Washington institution since 1907.
