Plato said that democracy is not necessarily the most intelligent form of government. It is the best type simply because it is the freest.

The haggling over increasing the national debt limit ["Buckle down on debt debate," Editorial, June 29] is an example of dumb democracy. If the United States defaults on its obligations, then suddenly our economy will be launched into a tailspin.

Nobody disagrees on this effect! So why the senseless posturing? Extend the debt limit. Then address the means to reduce it.
