Conroy’s lawyer argues for conviction to be dismissed

Jeffrey Conroy’s sentencing was delayed Wednesday when his attorney asked State Supreme Court Justice Robert W. Doyle to dismiss Conroy’s conviction.

William Keahon asked to argue the motion in Doyle’s private chambers. Doyle agreed. Conroy said he would allow the arguments to take place outside his presence. Doyle, Keahon and Assistant District Attorney Megan O’Donnell then left the courtroom.

Conroy, 19, of Medford, faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Ecuadorean immigrant Lucero. Stabbing victim Marcelo Lucero’s family was also to be given an opportunity to speak in court before Conroy was sentenced. Conroy’s family may also have a chance to address the judge.

Conroy, a former Patchogue-Medford High School football and lacrosse player, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter just over a month ago. Conroy’s parents, Robert and Lori, entered the courtroom at 9:35 a.m., joined by about a dozen family and supporters.
