The Oyster Bay Town board last week awarded a $1.2-million contract to Landtek Group Inc. for renovation of an athletic field at John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview.

The board previously agreed to foot the bill for a multisport turf field and other improvements to the grounds of the Plainview-Old Bethpage school district facility with the provision that the field be accessible to residents as well as students because of a lack of recreational opportunities in the area.

The lowest acceptable bid came from the Amityville company, according to the town.

The work at the school on Washington Avenue will include lighting, drainage, a new scoreboard and sound system, and track improvements. The preliminary estimate had put the cost at $2 million.

The work is expected to be completed by fall.

Residents will be able to have access to the field after 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and all day on Sundays during the school year, with hours expanded in summer.
