Students across Long Island started taking new state assessment tests today, but some parents are still refusing to have their children participate.

Parents across Long Island are joining the growing opt-out movement. Many say the new tests are unnecessary and stress students out.

The state education commissioner has said that this year's tests, which are based on the new Common Core standards, will be more challenging for students. Still, he insists the exams help determine whether students will be college- and career-ready.
