Cops: Huntington man fatally shot feet from his home

A Huntington Station man was shot and killed during a street robbery just a few feet from his home, Suffolk police said.

Around 9:53 p.m. Sunday, Geremias Caceres, 38, of 10th Avenue, was walking with another man to his home when he was approached by three men at the corner of 10th Avenue and 15th Street, who robbed them, said Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky.

The robbers shot Caceres and fled south on 10th Avenue on foot, and remain at large, Pelkofsky said. Caceres was taken to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The other man was not injured, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether Caceres was targeted, Pelkofsky said. The investigation is continuing.

Caceres worked in landscaping and lived with his wife and two children, said family friend Ivonne Perix. He served as a deacon of his church, the Genesis Assembly of God in Westbury, she said. "He was an awesome guy, a churchgoing person," Perix said. "His life was his family."

Caceres' family declined to comment, Perix said.

"We just want the person who did this to be caught," she said.

Next-door neighbor Jean St. Fort, who lives adjacent to the site of the shooting, said he heard three gunshots Sunday night. "It is scary," he said. "We live right here."

Police ask that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. Callers will remain anonymous.
