Suffolk County police are investigating allegations that someone hacked the Town of Islip’s official website last month.
The website, which is hosted on an off-site town server, crashed about 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 24, said town spokeswoman Inez Birbiglia. The incident was reported to police at about 8:10 p.m.
The town’s Internet connection is managed by a Nesconset-based company called Sidera Networks, which also publishes the town website’s IP address to the network. Sidera did not respond immediately to a message seeking comment.
The website was back online the morning of Aug. 27, officials said. No personal information was breached as a result of the hacking, Birbiglia said.
Police and town officials said they’re unaware of a motive. No arrests have been made.
“We have taken immediate steps to protect ourselves,” Birbiglia said, after the incident.
