Coram 9/11 memorial unveiling Sunday
The Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars will unveil its Sept. 11 memorial at Diamond In The Pines Park on Sunday, one week before the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The unveiling ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Coram park, near the intersection of Route 112 and Pine Road.
The ceremony and the memorial honor veterans of the war on terrorism, rescue workers who died Sept. 11, 2001, and the residents of Brookhaven and Riverhead towns who died in the terrorist attacks, said Richard Acritelli, who helped organize the memorial.
“It’s important that the kids know about the rescue workers and the veterans and the people that we lost,” said Acritelli, a teacher at Rocky Point High School.
The memorial includes three stones, marked “9/11 Victims,” “War On Terror” and “Rescue Workers.” Two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center are incorporated into the memorial.
The site also includes a statue of an eagle, a walkway and benches.
