Corwith Windmill to get landmark status
Built in Sag Harbor in 1800, the old Corwith Windmill was relocated to Water Mill in 1813 and operated until 1887. The old Corwith Windmill on Montauk Highway in Water Mill will be getting some belated recognition from Southampton Town later this year, more than 30 years after it was listed on both the State and National Register of Historic Places.
The windmill, the second-oldest on Long Island, was built in Sag Harbor in 1800 and moved to the Water Mill hamlet green in 1813 when it was purchased by the James Corwith family. It remained in operation until 1887 and was restored in 1978.
Although it has been recognized as historic by the state and federal governments, the windmill was never put on the town list of historic places. So, at the recommendation of the town’s Landmarks and Historic Districts board, a public hearing will take place on June 26 to correct that omission by formally designating it as a town landmark as well.
