Could Nabers shed non-contact jersey this week?

Instead of seeing red, Malik Nabers could finally see blue this week — as in a blue Giants jersey in team drills.

John Harbaugh said Sunday that it’s a “possibility” Nabers could shed the red non-contact jersey he’s worn in his last three practices. That would open Nabers up to more contact in drills, which would be a final hurdle before he’s cleared to play in a regular-season game.

However, Harbaugh cautioned that it all depends on Nabers’ surgically repaired knee, and the team isn’t rushing anything.

“I don’t think it’s a necessity this week,” Harbaugh said. “We’re still three weeks out from the first game . . . we’ll see where he’s at this week. We’ll see how he feels [Monday].”

Nabers first wore the non-contact jersey on Aug. 13. On Tuesday, he wore it while playing consecutive snaps for the first time in 7-on-7 drills. The Giants held him out of last Thursday’s joint practice due to not being able to control the environment around him.

But based on Harbaugh’s comments, it appears Nabers’ ramp-up process is close to ready for more work. Harbaugh said last week Nabers has to face contact before he plays in a game.

The Giants aren’t committed to having him ready by Week 1, but he’s yet to have any setbacks in training camp. The team has three practices this week before Friday’s preseason finale against the Jets.

Nabers certainly won’t play that night. If he can practice without the red jersey, it’ll a good sign for his health as the season approaches. But neither he nor Harbaugh are rushing the process.

“I'm taking each step accordingly and just making sure my body feels good with taking the next step week by week, or day by day, or whatever they want to do,” Nabers said last week.
