This investigation ["Lab probe must be independent," Opinion, Feb. 23] of the Nassau County Police Crime Laboratory needs to be concerned not only with the errors of the lab, but what was done with the unreliable results by the prosecutor.

What did District Attorney Kathleen Rice know and when did she know it? Did she knowingly offer false evidence as truthful, when her assistants had crime lab representatives testify as to the accuracy of their tests?

We not only require a complete investigation of what was done or not done by the crime lab, we need to know how knowledge of this was handled.

Your suggestion that the governor or the attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to investigate this mess is a good one. Such an appointment is urgently needed and there would not be anything wrong if the governor or attorney general appointed the person Rice suggested.

How is it possible that one of the wealthiest counties in the country could have such an incompetent crime lab? ["Crime lab shut, 2 probes planned," News, Feb. 19] They are supposed to find out the truth.

I am sure they are well paid, with great benefits, but if what we have heard turns out to be accurate, the people responsible for the lab should be punished.

Unfortunately, like every other time people screw up, they get promotions and more pay. This is one of things wrong with this country, no accountability.
