Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has until midnight Wednesday to sign or veto a controversial bill determining the future of the former Freeport Armory.

The bill, championed by Assemb. Earlene Hooper (D-Hempstead), would transfer ownership of the old military facility to Cedarmore Corp., a nonprofit that shares space with the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ, across the street from the armory.

Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy is urging a veto. He notes the village has long sought the property, possibly for heavy equipment management.

Hooper favored that option too -- until Kennedy beat Andrew Hardwick, a Hooper ally, in the last Freeport mayoral election.
