Cuomo watch: Filling legislative vacancies
With the surprise resignation of Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., the State Legislature will have nine vacancies when the Senate and Assembly return to Albany Wednesday to kick off the 2014 session.
And Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo hasn't said when -- or even if -- he will set special elections to fill the slots. He could leave them vacant until the November elections, though that would make a lot of Democrats and Republicans unhappy.
Fuschillo, a Merrick Republican, resigned Dec. 31 to head the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) was elected Brooklyn borough president, creating the other Senate vacancy.
The remaining seven openings were created in the Assembly when the incumbent left due to election to a local office.-- Yancey Roy
