Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo last week offered a risk-free exhortation to the state's separate legislative branch, where a rash of indictments recently hit members of both houses -- five Democrats in this latest round -- with more expected.

"What I have said to the legislature was, 'Look, I think the best antidote for all of this, for the negative publicity that some members of the legislature have had over the past few weeks, is, do your job, and do it extraordinarily well," Cuomo said.

"Pass bills to make this state a better state . . . They should be able to turn around at the end of the session and say, 'We have had a great session. We got a lot of good things done and, by the way, we did it despite everything else and all the distractions.' "-- Dan Janison
