Daddino's gem leads Carey's baseball victory
John Daddino struck out 14 and scattered six hits in 61/3 innings as No. 3 Carey topped No. 7 Mepham, 5-1, Wednesday in Game 2 of a best-of-three Nassau Class AA quarterfinal.
The series is tied at 1, and will conclude at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Carey. Kyle DeMeo had two hits and two RBIs, Mike Marino went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Daddino had a hit and two runs for Carey (13-8). Tom Rydezwski hit a two-run single in the second inning to give Carey a 3-0 lead.
Bellmore JFK 5, Massapequa 2: Andrew Wood went 2-for-3 and Joe Gallito had a hit and two RBIs as No. 6 Bellmore JFK (11-10) swept the best-of-three Class AA quarterfinal series. Wood pitched seven innings for Bellmore JFK, which advances to a best-of-three semifinal series that starts on Monday.
Division 8, Valley Stream North 6: Rob MacNamara's second- inning, two-run single gave No. 2 Division (13-7) a 5-1 lead over No. 13 Valley Stream North in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class A quarterfinal. Steven Lander went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and J.J. Kissane 2-for-2 with four runs. Game 2 is at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at VSN.SOFTBALL
Farmingdale 1, Mepham 0: Isabell Corrao struck out six in a two-hitter and drove in Keri Ossenfort with a double in the first inning to lift No. 4 Farmingdale (10-6) in a Nassau Class AA quarterfinal. Farmingdale will play East Meadow Friday at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
Floral Park 6, Bethpage 0: Samantha Giovanniello struck out nine and walked one in a one-hitter to lead No. 1 Floral Park in a Class A quarterfinal. Melissa Correa was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Allison Bostrom and Angelica Titor each added two RBIs for Floral Park (16-4), which will play. New Hyde Park at 4 p.m. Friday at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
New Hyde Park 3, Sewanhaka 1: Lisa O'Callaghan threw a five-hitter and struck out nine to lead No. 4 New Hyde Park (8-10) over No. 5 Sewanhaka in a Class A quarterfinal. Megan Favale scored on an error in the second to make it 2-0 for New Hyde Park.
Seaford 1, Clarke 0: Erika Nogan pitched a four-hitter for No. 2 Seaford (20-2) in a Class A quarterfinal. Val Insardi stole home in the fifth for Seaford, which will face No. 3 Plainedge at 4 p.m. Friday at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
