Dan Bullis scores game-winner as Mt. Sinai wins Suffolk 'B' championship
There were few easy goals Wednesday night. In fact, there were few goals, period.
In a game that was tightly played and tightly defended, Mt. Sinai senior attack Dan Bullis got free for a dunk shot at the right crease with 3:41 left that stood as the game-winner in the Mustangs' tense 8-7 victory over Sayville in the Suffolk B championship game at Stony Brook University's LaValle Stadium.
Bullis had two goals and two assists. Teammate Griffin McGrath also had a big night, scoring four times. Mt. Sinai (16-3) will face Manhasset for the Long Island Class B title at 6 p.m. on Saturday at SBU. Sayville finished 12-6.
McGrath, a fleet midfielder, dazzled in the first half, scoring Mt. Sinai's first three goals.
Jack Coan and Matt Selts each had two first-half goals for Sayville. Selts finished on a Coan pass to give Sayville a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter, but the Mustangs cut it to 5-4 at the half on goals by McGrath and Mike Hagenberger.
Mt. Sinai forged the game's third tie when he landed a long blast from the left wing that made it 5-all. Sayville's Jason Intermesoli untied it on a feed from Dan Murphy and Zack Rudolf retied it by going coast-to-coast with a ground ball.
McGrath scored his fourth on a quick feed to the slot from Bullis to give Mt. Sinai its first lead since the second quarter, but, naturally, Sayville knotted it one last time on an unassisted turn-and-shoot maneuver by Intermesoli.
Manhasset upsets Lynbrook.Tyler Dunn scored three goals and Matthew Gavin added a pair Tuesday night as Manhasset downed unbeaten Lynbrook, 9-6, in the Class B Nassau final to advance to the LI championship game. Manhasset improved to 14-5; Lynbrook finished 18-1.
