Danny Frisch bounces back for Oceanside
With the way the first inning was going, it appeared the Oceanside bullpen was in store for a long day. Starter Danny Frisch made sure that wouldn't be the case.
He issued two walks, a single and a grand slam in a four-run first inning, but he didn't allow a single run over the next five innings and it gave the offense time to put up runs in a 9-6 win over East Meadow in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs.
Frisch got out of a second-and-third two-out jam in the second and allowed just three base runners over the next four innings.
"He doesn’t give many long balls up," Oceanside coach Andy Morris said. "That was big for him to settle down because normally he’s a hot-headed kid and I could see he was angry. He did a nice job."
Mike Connell had an RBI double and an RBI single to bring Oceanside within 4-2 before a seven-run fifth inning. Joe Gallub (2-for-4) hit an RBI single to make ot 4-3. Nick Idevaio's two-run double made it 5-4 and Connell followed with a two-run single. Justin D'Angelo added a run-scoring single as did Joe Totino, who had two hits in the inning.
It was the opposite of the first two games the teams played. In 17 innings, Oceanside left 18 runners in scoring position in a 1-1 tie and 1-0 loss.
"We knew Danny would come around and we knew we would eventually hit," Connell said. "Everyone hit the ball hard."
Said Frisch: "We’ve done this before and we’ll probably do it again. We’ve been averaging 10 runs the last four games. It was more of the same again."
