Regarding "Another death on Hempstead Tpke." [News, June 5], my sincerest sympathies to the family of victim Peter Thearle, 19, of Levittown. I have been complaining for years about south-to-north crossing at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Gardiners Avenue, which is near the spot where cars hit this pedestrian.
I even insisted on making an official complaint to the police about an incident where I was trapped in the middle of Hempstead Turnpike as cars continued to turn west in front of me. There have been times when I was crossing with an elderly or disabled person in a wheelchair, and I would slow my crossing to wait in the road, and wave my hands to drivers, to help this person cross safely.
I hope that someone will take up the cause and investigate the indifference on this long-term unsafe condition.
