South Asian-Americans on Long Island for the first time will join Nassau County officials to jointly celebrate the U.S. Independence Day and their South Asian heritage on Sunday.

The free American Independence Day festival, presented by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Human Rights Commission Chairman Zahid Syed, will be held at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater in Eisenhower Park from 1 to 9:30 p.m.

The family-oriented event will feature music, food, arts and crafts, and displays from various South Asian countries. There will also be a dance competition, free rides, balloons, health screenings and a child safety identification program.

Punjabi singers Sunita Bhatti and Baljit Malwa, along with Haider Afzal, a former contestant in the Pakistan Sangeet Icon, a reality-based singing competition in Pakistan, will perform.

For more information, contact Syed at 516-903-2460 or zahidsyed9@aol.com.
