Polar Bear
Plunge
It's become a New Year's Day tradition -- plunging into the chilly waters along Long Island's shores.
In Northport, the icy dip is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 410 and the Northport Fire Department Smokeaters -- it's all part of an effort to raise money for the Northport Food Pantry. Copenhagen Bakery will serve hot cocoa and snacks -- prizes will go to swimmers who stay in the bay the longest.
No swimming? If the cold water is not your thing, you can sponsor swimmers or show up to cheer them on from dry land.
WHEN | WHERE Noon Jan. 1, Steers Beach, Eatons Neck Road, Northport. Rain or shine.
INFO 516-297-1678, www.t410north portny.org
ADMISSION $5 suggested donation per swimmer
