Decision on Middle Island project density pushed back
The Brookhaven Town board did not discuss at last week’s meeting whether to allow a developer to increase density in a proposed project in Middle Island.
Instead, Councilwoman Connie Kepert said board members might vote on the change of zone application at the June 4 meeting.
“There will probably be a decision at the next board meeting. I predict the next meeting or the meeting after that,” Kepert said.
Applicant KRS Birchwood Park Homes Inc. of New Hyde Park is requesting to increase the number of residential units for the proposed Highland Green development from 36 homes to 52.
The residential units would sit on 23.5 acres of land KRS Birchwood owns just north of Middle Country Road and Birchwood Park Drive.
Several residents living near the proposed site said they oppose the project.
“I feel very confident the board will vote it down,” said Martin Filler, 73, a Middle Island resident and member of the Birchwood at Spring Lake Home Owner’s Association. “We turned in over 500 petitions in opposition of the change of zone.”
If the board decides to approve the rezoning application, KRS Birchwood would construct 32 two-bedroom units and 21 one-bedroom units ranging from 800 to 1,200 square feet. The cost of the units has not been determined.
