The Deer Park School District recently equipped every fifth-grader at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School with their own MacBook laptops to use for classwork and research.

The new laptops are part of a program called Kristin Green Apple of Our Eye Initiative, which is dedicated to the memory of 2007 Deer Park High School graduate Kristin Green.

Green, an employee of the Apple store at Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station, was killed in a car accident in Pennsylvania this past August.

The fifth-graders and their parents were required to attend a training workshop on the use and care of the computers.

The money for the program came out of the district’s general fund, but a spokeswoman said district will seek funding from BOCES and outside grants to help with the $110,000-a-year tab in the future.

The fifth-graders will keep their laptops, current fourth-graders will get new ones next year, and so on.

The laptops will be used for virtual field trips to museums, research, blogging and podcasting.
