In what may be a sign of better economic times to come, Long Island is getting its first John Deere construction dealership. There are several other Deere dealerships on the East End, but they provide agriculture equipment.
Jesco, a heavy-equipment construction supplier in South Plainfield, N.J., plans to take over a 9,000-square-foot building in Deer Park for $1.1 million and open the dealership there later this year, said company president Jon Robustelli.
"Things are starting to look better" economically, Robustelli said. In the past two years Jesco has opened Deere dealerships in Maryland, Delaware and upstate in Beacon.
The dealership in Deer Park will offer bulldozers, back hoes and other earth-moving equipment. Jesco plans to expand the space to between 12,000 and 15,000 square feet.
"We have bottomed out," Robustelli said of the economy. "The only question is how sharp the incline is going to be."
