DeLyra, DelCore defense lifts Bay Shore to upset

Only one emotion ran through Claire Healy's veins with her Bay Shore squad up by one late in the Suffolk Class A final - fear.
Shannon Gilroy tends to do that to her opponents.
The Northport star, who's Suffolk's leading scorer, drew a blocking foul with 31.8 seconds left, but was stripped by Caroline deLyra on the ensuing whistle and Cynthia DelCore scooped up the ground ball.
The Bay Shore duo's key plays preserved an improbable 13-12 win for the third-seeded Marauders over No. 1 Northport at the Dowling Sports Complex yesterday.
Bay Shore (16-3), which will play Farmingdale at noon on Sunday back at Dowling for the Long Island Class A title, won its first Suffolk title since 2005 by knocking out the two-time defending champions.
One could excuse Healy for her nervous energy as Northport (17-2) scored four straight goals after her free-position score gave Bay Shore a 13-8 lead with 13:44 left in the game. Especially because Healy's goal was the last Bay Shore would score.
"I was really scared, without a doubt," she said. "We knew we had to play a perfect game today."
At times the Marauders looked flawless, but at others, their efforts seemed futile. After they scored the first four goals of the game, the teams traded 6-0 runs culminating with Alyssa Leonard's score on a feed from Carly Cox to give Bay Shore a 10-6 lead with 20:58 left in the game.
Gilroy, who finished with a game-high six goals, scored while falling with 2:39 to play to make it 13-11, and Courtney Fortunato's sidearm whip made it a one-goal game with 59.9 seconds to go.
SWR takes Class C yet again. Kait Brosco scored six goals with three assists as No. 1 Shoreham-Wading River (16-2) won its seventh straight county title with a 15-10 win over No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point in the Suffolk Class C final at the Dowling Sports Complex. Chelsey Newman added five goals and one assist, and Jen DeVito had four goals and an assist. SWR will play the winner of today's Manhasset/Cold Spring Harbor Nassau final at 5 p.m. on Sunday back at Dowling looking for its fourth straight Long Island Class C championship.
