The newest Suffolk County legislator, Al Krupski, a former Southold Democratic town board member, spent three times more than Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter in winning a special election last month with 67 percent of the vote, campaign finance reports show.
Krupski raised $75,774 and spent $66,826 in the Jan. 15 contest to fill GOP Brookhaven Supervisor Edward P. Romaine’s former 1st District seat. Walter raised $24,825 and spent $19,514, according to the 27-day postelection report filed Monday, along with earlier reports.
The bulk of Krupski’s funds, $55,000, came from the Suffolk County Democratic Committee, along with $5,000 from Presiding Officer William Lindsay’s legislative campaign fund, Committee for a Democratic Majority. Beyond the party, Krupski’s biggest donor was SEIU Local 1199, which represents health care workers and gave $3,440.
Walter’s biggest donor was former GOP County Executive Robert Gaffney’s campaign fund, which gave $5,000. The Riverhead Republican Committee gave $3,000, and Romaine’s campaign committee gave $2,000. Islip GOP Supervisor Tom Croci’s campaign also gave $1,000 as did Walter’s largest union donor, Suffolk probation officers.
