Brassard agrees to deal

Derick Brassard and the Rangers have agreed to terms on a new long-term contract and will avoid arbitration, according to reports. The deal will pay Brassard $25 million over five years for an annual average of $5 million. Brassard previously was scheduled for an arbitration hearing Monday, which will now be avoided.

The Rangers have escaped arbitration hearings with each of the three players who filed for it this summer. Brassard joins Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello. The Rangers have just one more restricted free agent to re-sign , defenseman John Moore.

Lakers: Scott's our coach

The Los Angeles Lakers have confirmed Byron Scott is their new head coach. The Lakers finally made the long-anticipated announcement last night in a news release.

Scott told reporters last weekend he had been hired by the Lakers, who haven't had a head coach since Mike D'Antoni resigned April 30.

Scott reached two NBA Finals with the Nets. He was the coach of the year in 2008. -- APcolleges

Orange to host Storm

Syracuse University officials confirmed that the Orange men's basketball team will host St. John's on Dec. 6 at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse and St. John's were original members of the Big East. Last year was Syracuse's first as a member of the ACC. This year's Syracuse-St. John's matchup is the second in a home-and-home series. Last year, Syracuse defeated St. John's, 68-63, at Madison Square Garden. -- APBASEBALL

Weiss lifts Body Armor

Hofstra-bound third baseman Chris Weiss (Ridge) hit a fifth-inning grand slam to wipe out a 3-2 deficit and send the Body Armor Titans to a 9-5 win over the Indiana Blue Jays at Wright State University in the championship game of the Dinger Bat 18U World Series in Dayton, Ohio, Sunday. Ryan Kavanagh of East Meadow threw 22/3 innings of scoreless relief for the save. Dan McEvoy of Westhampton batted .542 and was named MVP. Body Armor finished the tournament 9-0 in the 18-and-under bracket.--
