Dering Harbor Mayor Timothy Hogue in tie with write-in candidate

The longtime mayor of Dering Harbor, a tiny village on Shelter Island, tied with a write-in candidate in Tuesday's election.

Timothy Hogue, who has served as mayor for 21 years, and Patrick Parcells, a retired banker who waged a write-in campaign, tied with 25 votes each, village clerk Laura Hildreth said.

Mary Walker, an incumbent trustee who ran with the mayor, also tied with write-in candidate Robert Ferris.

Brandon Rose, another incumbent trustee, was the only candidate elected in the village Tuesday. He received 28 votes. Elizabeth Morgan, a write-in trustee candidate, received 21 votes.

Hogue, Walker and Rose ran on the Dering Harbor Party line. Parcells, Ferris and Morgan ran their write-in campaigns together.

Hildreth said the village will send the ballots to the Suffolk County Board of Elections for certification. The village will then have to schedule another vote to decide the tied mayoral and trustee race, she said.

The village has 59 registered voters, Hildreth said. It has 11 year-round residents, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.
